There is a campaign to save the British cherry.
I found this information very sad; “in the last 50 years we’ve lost 90% of our Cherry orchards and now import around 95% of the Cherries we eat”
Cherries – with their cheery colour, glossy shine and fruity juiciness – are as much a part of our British treasury of fruit and vegetables as the apple!!
So there will be a National Cherry Day on the 18th July 2009 to kick off lots of events around the UK. Cherry baking days, adopt a Cherry tree or just go and pick some, or try and buy some British ones in the shops/markets.
